In a clause, adverbials are words or phrases that answer questions starting with an adverb such as: where, when, how, or why.

Here are the simplest possible questions of this type and answers to them.

Question: Where?
Answer: In the forest.

Question: When?
Answer: Tomorrow

Question: How?
Answer: Fast.

Question: Why?
Answer: because of poor health.

Examples of adverbials in a clause

Here are some examples of clauses that employ an adverbial:

She sneaked into the chamber. (Where? into the chamber)

Tom reads in the evening. (When? in the evening)

We trod carefully. (How? carefully)

Ann agreed for the sake of her father. (Why? for the sake of her father).
