Once you have mastered clauses you are ready to start building compound sentences. One easy way to build a compound sentence in English is to string together two or more caluses, then use connectives like "and", "or" or "but" to glue the caluses together. The connectives are a gramatical equivalent of a plus (+) sign. Here are some examples.

Examples

John is brave, and he often shows it.

Sarah wanted to go to the beach, but the weather turned cold.

Both Angie and John know how to cook, but neither of them is very creative in the kitchen.
