Calling things into question with why should

Calling things into question with why should

Created:14 Oct 2023 21:51:25 , in  intermediate

If you think that a proposed idea, a request or an action is suboptimal or inadequate, you can express your doubts or ask for a reason for it. In English one common way to do this is in a form of a question based on why + should directly followed by a noun or a pronoun (I, We, They, etc. ).

Examples

Here are a few examples that employ why + should + pronoun pattern:

I'm not happy with the service I have received. Why should I pay for it?

This book is so boring. Why should I read it all?

Clearly, Fiona is ready to give Tom the benefit of the doubt on his version of events, but why should You?

Every day Brandon's trousers are covered in mud. Why should I put up with it any longer?
