In any language, English included, it is useful to be able to say that you have decided to choose less risk or a safer option because you want to avoid any potential negative consequences or problems, even if your caution might seem excessive. When faced with uncertainty or ambiguity you want to be able to say that you prefer a cautious approach and have made a conservative decision.

This text gives an overview of six commonly user phrases that refer to making cautious or conservative decisions and choosing less risk in English.

Expressions signalling less risky approach

play it safe: to choose the safest or most conservative option in order to avoid potential risks or negative outcomes,

err on the side of safety: to choose the safer option to ensure safety or to minimize risks,

better safe than sorry: to emphasizes the importance of prioritizing safety over taking unnecessary risks, as it is preferable to avoid potential regrets or negative consequences,

exercise caution: to take careful and deliberate actions and be vigilant and prudent in order to avoid potential dangers or pitfalls,

tread carefully: to proceed with caution and be mindful of one's actions,

take no chances: to try to avoid risks altogether and adopt a cautious approach to ensure safety or success, or refrain from taking any actions that could lead to negative outcomes or uncertainties.
