Introducing exception with except + when + exception pattern

You can complement a sentence with information about when exceptional circumstances occur with except + when + exception pattern. The pattern can also be used to tell when something is not true or possible.

The exception part of the pattern explains why the common circumstances, which are often given in the first part of the sequence, do not apply.

The street is quiet, except when a car passes by.

I usually go to sleep early, except when it is Saturday and I want to go to a disco.

The trees in our garden stay green all year round, except when the temperature drops below minus ten degrees centigrade.

You do not see politicians on the streets, except when they have to campaign to get elected again.
