Subject verb object pattern in English

Created:09 Sep 2024 17:27:37 , in  elementary

In English, majority of sentences is based on the subject - verb - object pattern (SVO). In the pattern, the subject (S) tells what the sentence is going to be about. The verb (V) part of the pattern provides information about what the subject does. The object (O) is the person or thing receiving the action given by the verb.

Here are four example sentences constructed using the SVO pattern.

In the sentences, the subject, the verb and the object are marked with green, read and blue colour, respectively.

John is reading a book.

Timmy refused help.

Tracy gave a gift to her husband.

Our neighbours at number 37 are visiting their relatives in Greece.
