Using a complement to complete the subject of a clause

Using a complement to complete the subject of a clause

Created:24 Nov 2023 12:19:15 , in  elementary

In English, a clause can follow a few different patterns. One of them is subject + verb + complement pattern. In this pattern the complement part completes the subject, and the verb part works like an equal sign.

Examples

Here are some examples of clauses based on subject + verb + complement pattern.

She is a doctor. (She = a doctor).

Tom remained silent. (Tom = silent)

The garden looks beautiful. (The garden = beautiful).

Common verbs used with subject + verb + complement pattern are: be, become, seem, appear, remain, prove, turn, feel, look, sound.
